Chapter 5.5 Simplify Algebraic Expressions

Good Evening to all,
.... And we are moving onward to one of my favorite of all times concepts------
ALGEBRA!! Let the party begin!
We are continuing to build on our skills of using the Negative Rules, the Fraction Rules, and the Decimal Rules and putting these together to solve ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS!  Can you guess what Algebraic Expressions are?  Bet you can... we will go over the obvious definition,  so don't panic..
There are many vocabulary terms in this section so make sure you add them to the Reference Spirals asap.
Like Terms are terms that are the same, such as 2b, 45b..... and all constants( numbers ).  As always, we will be going over this in class so don't despair........

Chapter 5.4 DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY

Good Evening to all,
Today we are working on learning a new property in Algebra, and that is the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY.  This is the third property or rule of math in this chapter so far!  Distributive Property is really like DOUBLE MULTIPLY.  So you are distributing what is outside the ( ) to the inside Terms.  Sounds a bit tricky, but........ it is absolutely important that you understand this property.  Watch the videos along with following along in the book and I am sure you will catch onto this important rule.

Chapter 5.3 PROPERTIES of Operations

Good Evening to all,
Today we are moving onward with using the PROPERTIES- properties are laws that we can use to solve math problems.  They involve the operations in math ( + - x /).  In these cases they really only involve multiplying and adding operations! We have the Commutative Property for x + and the
Associative Property for x +.  Commutative Property is that you can switch the TERMS in an equation to solve for x +.
 Example: 5 + 6 = 6 + 5  or 6(5) = (6)5  - so here the
terms or numbers are switching.
Associative Property is where the TERMS stay put,
but the Parenthesis CHANGE.
Example: (6 + 5) + 7 = 6 + ( 5 + 7).
The terms stay put and the ( ) move.
NOW this is true for x + only when you have
 all the same operation!
Are these properties true for DIVIDING and SUBTRACTING?  Follow along in the book and do the examples in the videos in your Reference Spirals.  VOCABULARY is important again in this section, so start to use it to make sense of it.

Chapter 5.2 SEQUENCES

Good Evening to you all,

Today we are going over SEQUENCES, or patterns in numbers.  Each number in the sequence is a TERM.
A term is always positive or negative!  We will go over this in the class so pay attention to the discussion and review the videos as often as needed. You need to keep up with the Graphic Organizer and the Vocabulary in your Reference Spiral as the Lessons happen from now on.  Do your best work and ask questions as often as you have them.
This section is short but valuable- make sure you understand the term TERMS!  by the end of the lesson.

Chapter 5 EXPRESSIONS!

Good Evening,

Are you just LOVING your new math books!!!!
Bet this was the best gift ever!
 So congratulations
on getting through a book and onto the last one for the YEAR!
Alyssa and Sebastian - Emaly's cute sister and brother!

We are moving onward to Chapter 5 EXPRESSIONS- here we are on the outer limits of ALGEBRA.
Vocabulary is important so pay attention to the terms and get to know and use them from now on.
You will be evaluating or solving expressions in this section- what is an expression?
Let's say you have the Expression: 4y
4 is the Coefficient and y is the Variable
In algebra, if you use a variable, you do not need to write down the operation of MULTIPLY- so 4y means 4 times y.  3mn  would mean 3 times m times n.  Another shortcut mathematicians like to use to sound important!
Some other vocabulary terms you will need are CONSTANTS- numbers and SUBSTITUTE in values.

Chapter 4.8 DIVIDING FRACTIONS

Hi, We are onto our last section for the chapter and the BOOK!!!! Yippee, I bet you are all so excited!
Anyways, we are doing the last operation with Fractions and that is DIVISION.  Dividing Fractions is really based on multiplying fractions- where you multiply both numerators and both denominators.  Dividing fractions is the opposite of multiplying, so we will do that.  You need to take the RECIPROCAL of the SECOND FRACTION and then MULTIPLY( change the divide to multiply) across.  This really is easier than it sounds so watch the videos and follow along in the book.

Homework:  Read the blog and watch the videos as often as needed:
ALONG With this, your Reference Spiral is to be completed by the TEST on Tuesday- this way use can use this - especially the vocabulary and examples!

Chapter 4.6 MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS

Alrighty now, we are moving onto multiplying FRACTIONS, and believe it or not, it is easier than adding or subtracting fractions as there is ONE LESS STEP!  That always makes me happy!
SO following along with the examples in book and videos - you may find another way to solve these and that is fine also.  BUT you must work on down and circle what step you are working on - bring the  rest down and BOX IN THE ANSWER.  Remember that all answers that are fractions MUST BE SIMPLIFIED!

I believe that this beauty owns Matt!

Chapter 4.5 Adding and Subtracting MIXED NUMBERS

Good Afternoon,
This section continues on with FRACTIONS using
MIXED Numbers (Both Whole and Fractions).
You still need to keep in mind the FRACTION RULES and the NEGATIVE RULES for these types of questions.  So, like most concepts, there are many ways to solve these, follow format of coming down and show all steps and make sure your ANSWER is in simply form.

Can you guess who these SUPER STARS Are?

Chapter 4.4 Adding and Subtracting Unlike Fractions

Good Evening to all,
We are continuing on with adding and subtracting fractions.  The primary thing to remember is to........ have common denominators. Last lesson already provided these common denominators, so this step was done.  This lesson is making sure that you do that yourself.  So when adding, subtracting or even comparing fractions, COMMON DENOMINATORS are necessary most of the time.  So pay attention to the format( After all - I am the format queen!) in doing this step for fractions.
 FRACTION RULES:
+  or  - (comparing)
Common Denominators
Add/Subtract  Numerators (NEGATIVE RULES)
You are Juggling 2 SETS of RULES!!

And awww.... Connor with his little kittie..........

Chapter 4.3 Adding and Subtracting FRACTIONS

Happy New Year!  I hope your winter break was exceptionally great, especially that we had it extended.  Remember that I am looking forward to the PAPER SLIDE VIDEOS that you and your group were assigned, so keep working on these.  Make them accurate and clear, but entertaining!  These will be posted on the blog! In addition to these, I am looking for YOUR PERSONAL WAYS that you solve problems that is different than mine, but may help others.  And thirdly, keep sending in the pictures as these are pure fun.
Well, we need to get back into the math swing and I am sure you are all on board!  We are continuing on with Rational Numbers ( whole numbers, fractions and decimals that end or repeat) - actually, we are working on adding and subtracting FRACTIONS! I know this is a repeat of work from last year so this should be a breeze. The one thing that you are adding to last years skills is the NEGATIVE RULES!  SO.......  let's get started.
But before we do, let's meet DEXTER.
What a sweetie that Vipul has!

Homework: Open up your book and solve all problems in your working spiral.
Watch the videos on ASSISTments and answer the questions.
